A 42-year-old Yoga Studio in Toronto - Esther Myers Yoga Studio

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness, but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tama Soble, co-owner and director of Esther Myers Yoga Studio, located in Toronto, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Esther Myers Yoga Studio, our approach to yoga is deeply reflective and student-centred: yoga that is practised slowly, intelligently, and safely with the guidance of highly trained teachers who have a thorough understanding of anatomy and natural movement potential. As you explore, you will experience greater independence, pleasure, and ease in the body and the joy of discovering how you can move toward a healthy, relaxed and energetic state of body and mind by yourself, anytime, anywhere.

Tell us about yourself

I began studying yoga with Esther Myers, and Monica Voss, in 1984. At the time, I was a modern dancer and choreographer. The compassionate, intelligent, and creative approach taught at the Studio was a perfect fit for me. When I was ready to change careers, I was trained to become a yoga teacher at the Studio and then eventually became a co-owner with Monica Voss. Our deeply committed students motivate me every day. They are interested in exploring and applying the principles that we teach to grow as individuals. They comprise a remarkably supportive and integrated community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel that continuing to grow and evolve the 42-year-old Studio is our biggest ongoing accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is challenging and essential to continue implementing and assessing the outcomes of new initiatives in a difficult financial climate.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a great business partner, someone who compliments your strengths and you have good communication with.
  2. Keep learning and finding ways to be inspired.
  3. Surround yourself with well-trained employees.
