Equality and Support - A Glass Half Full

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marcela Gonzalez, Founder of A Glass Half Full, located in Covina, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our caregiving grants program focuses on providing monetary assistance to disabled/elderly individuals who do not qualify for caregiving assistance through public benefits. The purpose of the grant is for the individual to compensate their caregivers. Most of our grantees are immigrant individuals who do not qualify for public benefits due to their immigration status. Very frequently is a family member who is taking care of their loved one who is suffering from a disability and unable to be financially compensated. Caregiving is a selfless job that many people do with love, and they're willing to do it with or without compensation. However, in many cases, these caregivers have to quit their jobs and work less, which creates a financial burden. People with disabilities face a multitude of challenges just to complete activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, cooking, or taking their medications. Our caregiving grants program allows for more equality and fills the gap in services.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a licensed clinical social worker who has been working with underserved communities for over ten years. I decided to create A Glass Half Full, motivated to make a difference and relieve some of the struggles of others. I was able to relate; having a disability and growing up in an immigrant family, I know firsthand how difficult it was for our mother to raise two disabled children without any monetary assistance. I believe in passing on the blessings and giving back to those in need.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been to inspire others to follow their dreams.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest things that come up are the unknowns.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take action in something that makes you happy.
  2. Don't let others discourage you.
  3. Don't give up.
