Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erica Rankin, Founder, and CEO of Bro Dough. Erica is also a marketing specialist and is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

Bro Dough is a reinvention of a nostalgic treat - cookie dough! It contains quality plant-based ingredients, less sugar, and added protein. Our product is for individuals who want to enjoy a tasty treat without sacrificing their health or fitness goals.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

Back in 2018, I competed in several body-building competitions. Preparing for this, I had to break up with some of my favorite foods and got very good at recreating treats, including cookie dough. I have always been passionate about health and fitness. I never envisioned myself as a business owner, but I decided to pursue entrepreneurship after returning to SE Asia. I met many entrepreneurs on this trip, and that's where the idea came about to monetize my passion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have boot-strapped my business entirely since day one as a solopreneur and have built out a network of incredible people. I'm incredibly grateful to be in the position I am in and to be surrounded by knowledge.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

Pushing through the hard days. Sometimes, everything goes wrong. Everything. But you have to react logically rather than emotionally. This can be challenging, especially for first-time founders who might not have a team. This is why community is so important. It takes a village!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Whatever you decide to pursue, make sure you're passionate about it. It will be tough to push through the difficult days (especially if you do not see immediate monetary gains).
  2. Done is better than perfect. Don't overthink everything. In entrepreneurship, the plane is never built before it takes off. You make it while it's flying.
  3. Have a mentor. This has helped me immensely - you want someone to go to who has done it before. They can help guide you and help you avoid making inevitable mistakes.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Life is short. Go for it. Intentionally put yourself into uncomfortable situations. That is where the growth happens.
