Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jay Noel, Co-Owner of Abbott's Candies, located in Hagerstown, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Abbott's Candies is known for crafting handmade caramels and chocolates using classical recipes that multiple generations know and love. We focus on quality, customization, and specializing in an artisan taste. We are the oldest candy company in the state of Indiana, starting in 1890, and have catered to customers of all ages through the years.

Tell us about yourself

My background includes working in and with different areas of food service, one of which was Abbott's Candy Store. A decision was made with my wife to open our own candy store in Indianapolis carrying all Abbott's products. Then, upon the owner's decision to retire, we purchased the production and retail locations. When customers leave our store, they are usually happy with a smile on their faces. I also love to hear the stories of how our candy has brightened so many people's lives. I am also proud to be a part of something that has been around in Indiana for so many years.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am not sure many would think it was an accomplishment, but we were able to stay in business through the 911 aftermath, recessions, and the pandemic. It is really hard for a small business to survive those kinds of blows to people and businesses.

I am also very proud of Abbott's being selected to be an Indiana Artisan. This organization, started by the state of Indiana, juries in select artisans for their high-quality handcrafted items in various areas of art and foods. We are really proud to have had Bob Hope as one of our customers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I am not sure it is really an accomplishment but making sure that a piece of Indiana history does not go away and keeping everything authentic. It is hard with new technologies and many things changing in the food industry to keep the original recipe and, especially right now, to find employees to make the candy by hand.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prepare by educating yourself and/or getting assistance from someone who is very knowledgeable about good business practices. Know the state and federal laws and regulations and all the necessary things that have to be done to get it started.
  2. Stay calm and try to be ready. Be ready for anything to happen. You never know what tomorrow may bring.
  3. Grow at a pace that you can handle. Start off slow.
