Accessible skincare health - Plain Jane Skinbar

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and beauty, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amberly Donnelly, owner of Plain Jane Skinbar, based in Vancouver, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Instead of covering up skin damage caused by the environment, we are all about correcting and preventing the underlying causes. At Plain Jane Skinbar, we make skin health simple and accessible with a menu of 4 medical-grade facials & skincare that can easily be integrated into any health & wellness routine. Accurate results with little to no downtime all in 45 minutes.

Tell us about yourself

As a child, Amberly was a sun worshiper who never turned down a warm hug from the sun or the inviting embrace of a tanning bed. Upon reaching her early 20s, she started to notice the damage her external environment had already inflicted on her skin. This unfortunate realization kick-started a passion for skin health.

That enthusiasm led directly to a career in medical aesthetics, which allowed her the unique opportunity to gain access to all of the lotions, potions, gadgets, and gizmos the industry offers, however, as a busy young woman with a full calendar. She was often overloaded with too many choices, most of which were too costly for downtime and price to be effectively incorporated into her health and wellness routine.

Over the next decade, Amberly developed a simple routine of scientifically proven facials combined with medical-grade skincare. Her method transformed her damaged skin into bright, vibrant, and healthy skin. Knowing women in every neighborhood would benefit from this easy, straightforward routine, she created Plain Jane Skinbar to make the system accessible from a price perspective and treatment time and downtime.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Bringing together a fantastic group of women who have enabled the business to thrive even though we opened in the thick of the pandemic (Nov 2020).

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Work/life balance... our core values are if you look after things, they last. I believe this to be true of skin health, our customers, our community, and our work family. Sometimes it is hard to balance making sure everyone and everything is well looked after.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be customer-centric; if you are true to your customers' wants and needs, they will come. Make sure you are passionate about what you are doing. Always put things in a frame of reference, so you don't sweat the small stuff.
