Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet training but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jody Shaw, Founder and CEO of Adventure Woof Pack, located in Battle Ground, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Adventure Woof Pack is the first of its kind. It is a virtual subscription service that includes outdoor education and dog training with a new adventure each month. It includes monthly ask-the-expert sessions, and there is a different series for each stage of a dog's life. Content is available in English or Spanish. Adventure Woof Pack believes in creating a positive impact; therefore, we donate 1% of our profits to the Humane Society of the US and 1% of our profits to the American Trails Foundation. We are a member of 1% For The Planet and have received a B-Corp rating of 80.5, while most companies receive a rating of 50.

Our customers are dog owners that are interested in learning best practices for exploring with their pups beyond their backyard. Training tutorials are accessible on mobile or desktops and can be utilized at the time and day that will work for the dog owner's schedule.

Tell us about yourself

Adventure Woof Pack is a combination of my life's work. My career has included marketing, outdoor education, the business side of athletic programs, events, and large-scale online and in-person training. Adventure Woof Pack is the first of its kind; it is the blend of the outdoor and dog training industries. During the pandemic, the US saw the largest dog adoption, the highest outdoor recreation participation, and, unfortunately, the highest emergency response rescues due to participants not knowing best practices before they head into the outdoors. Our goal is to increase educational awareness of the outdoors and get most people to explore with their dogs safely.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our participants have consistently told us they have learned from our content and that they now feel prepared to go and explore with their dogs in the outdoors. It is also amazing to see our company's positive impact on environmental and animal rescue efforts across the US.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing as a business owner is realizing things need to be done in phases instead of all at the same time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't do the work by yourself. Make sure you focus your time on the things you do well and bring others in that will help for the items they are passionate about.
  2. Always make sure you are realistic with your financials, so you don't try to stretch out beyond that.
  3. Look for those areas where your business can help create a positive impact in the world.
