Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alicia Rodriguez, a Writer, Storyteller & Catalyst based in Ferragudo, Lagoa/Algarve, Portugal.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a writer and author living in Portugal. I host one/one bespoke personal retreats that I call Soul Journeys in the Algarve of Portugal. I run restorative, energising, immersive experiences where you bring a vision to life and determine how to make a difference. Here you build your most powerful, holistic legacy.

Tell us about yourself

I spent over twenty years as a leadership coach for visionary leaders and social and creative entrepreneurs with a specialty in leadership development for women. With my coaching experience as a foundation, coupled with my own personal and spiritual development, I support my clients in grappling with life's significant questions. I bring my experience of life to my work - years of travel, days in boardrooms, and nights in rainforests. Through my storytelling, my writing inspires individuals to become courageous and reach their limitless potential.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing my third book, a memoir entitled The Shaman's Wife, based on my experience living with and mentored by an Ecuadorian Shaman. The wisdom revealed to me is fundamental to my approach with clients who want to make a fresh start or go deeper into their ability to impact and influence their communities, businesses, or social issues.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Making sure I have time for myself. As a writer, I need quiet time for reflection, especially in nature. I am inspired by the ordinary things in life that most people miss because they are too busy. To hold space for someone struggling with a change they want to make and with the limiting beliefs they spent a lifetime creating means that I must practice extreme self-care.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask yourself first what inspires you and what is so important that you are willing to commit a piece of your life, money, and energy and incur risk. If it means enough to you, follow that.
  2. Ask for help when you need it. The days of the lone wolf are gone. We need each other.
  3. Seek mentors and then mentor others. Pay it forward.
