Helping Families Navigate Food Allergies - Allergies and Me

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lori Preshing, Principal Consultant of Allergies and Me, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help families with children on the spectrum, with diagnosis and differently-abled needs; this is my heart's work. Living the journey with my own sons allowed me to compile great resources/knowledge that I now use to guide others. Having walked the path, I now can show others the way.

Tell us about yourself

Both of my boys were our guiding light to optimal health and were responsible for our family’s off-beaten path adventures. When they were toddlers, they had a long list of symptoms no one could find answers for, and a mixed bag of ‘diagnosis’ between them. After one full year, we realized we had lost enough time struggling in the conventional system, said goodbye, and started to blaze our own trail. The boys never responded well to pharmaceuticals, so we found a team of natural practitioners who understood holistic health, on the same page as our family. I cannot stress the importance enough of this point; it is so crucial to find those that resonate with your child, as well as your entire family.

Children are here to mirror ourselves, challenge us, push us out of our comfort zones and guide us to work on our own issues, on ALL levels. If mommy has any health issues, it is high risk for baby, since they inherit the microbiome through birth and breastmilk. My boys were the first generation with food allergies and demonstrated this all the way back to grandma, as each family member did the testing. Fascinating.

Over 15 years later, I now have read over 100s books/blogs/articles on all aspects of holistic wellness, movement, detox, biomedical interventions, supplementation, herbs, cleanses, nutrition, growth, and development, as I explored these with my own children as they grew. I became a registered holistic nutritionist, a yoga & meditation instructor, a family coach and a detox specialist, next herbalist. Your child wants to be seen, wants to be heard in their way, they have special gifts to share- I see this clearly with each family I meet. There is ALWAYS something you can do for your child to start to feel better. Complex ones may require detective work to find all the puzzle pieces- and priceless when you see progress.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a second business with my boys in the time of the lockdowns.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping a personal touch while growing the scope of your practice and network, this is important to me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Start where you are, follow your heart's goals, use what you have gone through in your own life to turn around and help others.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always find ways you can be of service to the community, just BE with your children, truly see them and learn from them (they are here to teach us), and show them how they can give back to the world.
