Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Gleason, President of People First HR, LLC., located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

People First HR, is a one-stop shop for business owners looking for quick, effective, and compliant solutions for people management. We partner with small to medium-sized businesses in any industry that do not have access to HR expertise but need knowledgeable support.

Tell us about yourself

After working in corporate HR roles for several years, I wanted to put my HR skills to work in a different way. I knew there were business owners who could benefit from my knowledge and expertise in building human resources functions that fit their specific needs. People First HR's area of expertise is helping businesses stand up their HR functions compliantly and with integrity in their people operations through fair policy and practices.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I really enjoy working with small business owners to provide solutions that give them confidence and clarity around their people functions. A recent accomplishment is a client whose HR team was in transition. We quickly placed an onsite HR Consultant to keep the HR functions going and conducted a compliance audit. Within 60 days, we were implementing solutions to maximize their existing technology and bring them into compliance. We continued to work with the client over the next six months to streamline and document their human resources processes and hire a permanent replacement. Today, their internal HR resource is able to manage the HR functions with more efficiency and a better employee experience than ever before.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is making time for all the things running a business demands. Every day I wear all hats....marketing, accounting, networking, serving clients, executing projects, and the list goes on!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips I have for anyone starting their own business are:

  1. Never underestimate the value of building and maintaining a network.
  2. Start with what you know and expand from there.
  3. Know when it is time to outsource some business functions so you can focus on continuing to develop and grow the business.
