Seed-Bearing Lollipops - Amborella Organics

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taylor Clarke, Co-Founder of Amborella Organics, located in San Clemente, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My husband Brennan and I are the founders of the botanical candy brand Amborella Organics! We are best known for our seed-bearing lollipops. After devouring the candy with edible herbs and flowers, you can plant the biodegradable stick in soil and water and grow a herb or flower. Each herb or flower growth is a connection to what you just ate. Brennan grew up gardening with his grandma and, after she passed, found himself daydreaming in his garden about a way for people to have more meaningful connections in nature with those they love. Gazing at the flowers growing, he was struck with the similarity between a lollipop and a flower. This is where the idea of making a lollipop that could grow a flower first came to mind. He shared it with me, and we took steps together to make this beautiful idea a reality. Our customers are people who value sustainability, quality ingredients, innovation, and nature!

Tell us about yourself

I was a journalist before launching Amborella. In a way, you're trying to become an expert with each topic you cover, and you do this through research, interviews, and experiencing new things. Having a business is similar in the sense that each day is different; you can't possibly be great at it all, but you're certainly trying to be. While it's important to have a work-life balance, that is often not the reality. This is OK if you are self-motivated and inspired to keep going. Having someone in your life that understands this is extremely important. They don't necessarily have to be sharing in the world load with you, but they need to understand your sacrifice.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating things that are not a copy/paste of what is already out there! Daring to be different, even if that makes things more challenging.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The thing that also makes it the most exciting- change.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Confidence.
  2. Perseverance.
  3. Originality.
