Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Crawford, Founder of Anchor Wellness Center, located in Cincinnati, OH.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Are you inspired to be well? Traditional healthcare doesn't always provide well care. Our system is messed up. The Anchor Wellness Center is an integrated health and wellness collaborative that brings independent, like-minded, root-cause-based providers into the same place so that clients can find high-quality, vetted wellness without jumping through hoops. We look to solve problems for individuals who want to not only find health but optimize it and prevent illness/disability. Our goal is to empower individuals, both patients, and entrepreneurs, to be well.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy with over ten years of experience and clinical interest in working with those with chronic and persistent pain. Most people think that means working with individuals who are disabled and not productive citizens. But, that couldn't be further from the truth. In reality, many of us are walking around with nagging, an annoying type of pain. The kind that keeps up from going to a party where we'll be standing a lot. Or avoid activities because we believe they will cause more pain.

This specialty opened my eyes to the deficits in our traditional systems where insurance dictates care and the space between providers was prohibitive. Humans are simple but complex beings, and their motivation needs to be capitalized on. If time and distance are the barriers to optimizing outcomes, the Anchor Wellness Center was meant to solve that problem.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner has been surviving and thriving through a pandemic. We took a great risk with an expansion in August of 2020 that was scary and somewhat crazy, not knowing how long it would last. But we bet on ourselves, and we bet on the difference we could provide for our clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest tasks associated with being a business owner are coming to grips with my own shortcomings and giving myself grace. We all bring baggage to the table, and extending such grace to those around me has also been really hard. The majority of my hard work comes in the form of self-development to create a space that's open and evolving.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your runway- how long can you make it work if nothing changes.
  2. Take calculated risks but avoid analysis by paralysis.
  3. Find a great coach, mentor, mental health therapist, or friend-- you're going to need them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to be bold and know your value. That goes for the entrepreneur, the employee, or the patient. Through all my experience, most people know what they want and what they need; they're just scared to ask.
