Self-Care Physio - Anietie Ukpe-Wallace

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anietie Ukpe-Wallace, Founder of Self-Care Physio, located in Oakland, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a private physical therapy practice that specializes in pelvic floor health. Many of my customers are those who are in the reproductive spectrum ranging from pre-conception to menopause.

Tell us about yourself

I was originally working at a local hospital during the pandemic. Because of childcare issues, they were unwilling to continue to allow my schedule to be flexible, and I decided to leave. I knew I wanted to have more control over my time and schedule, so with the support of my partner, I decided to start my own practice. It has since continued to be successful, where I am seeing, on average, eight patients a week, which works for my schedule. I am motivated by getting to see how my patients progress and how I am able to help them get out of pain, become more functional and empower them to learn more about their bodies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I am still doing well in my business one year later. I have been able to grow my clientele with very little advertising, most of it through referrals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I am not very good at establishing a big picture or where I want to see my business in 5 years, and I do not have a good road map or strategy to get myself there. If I want my business to continue to grow and thrive, I know that will be essential for me to do soon.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a good niche so that you are able to stand apart from others in our field.
  2. Start small, don't feel like you have to have a big space or the most expensive equipment; all of that can come later.
  3. Prioritize treating your customers well because they will always come back or refer their friends to you.
