Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Willie Yip, Co-Owner of Apex Chiropractic, located in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a chiropractic clinic that offers many services: massage therapy, orthotics, laser therapy, shockwave therapy, spinal decompression, and naturopathy. We work with everyone from families to athletes. We even work with various film production crews and actors.

Tell us about yourself

When I was in university, my mom developed numbness in her hands. She didn't know better, so she went to her family doctor and was prescribed anti-inflammatories and painkillers. They didn't help. A family friend told us to take her to their chiropractor. So she would go, and I would help translate. Treatment consisted of gentle adjustments, and I felt sceptical that it would work. But over the course of 3 months, all her symptoms went away. That's when I got interested in chiropractic. I did more research into it and got more interested in it. The next thing I knew, I was in chiropractic school. Being in health care is very rewarding. Seeing my patients improve and get back to their daily lives is what drives me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is building such an advanced clinic with amazing technology. Chiropractic means hands-on and is very low-tech. Our clinic combines this with the latest therapies to provide our patients with the best care. We are proud to offer Impulse IQ no cracking adjustments, class IV laser therapy, shockwave therapy, spinal decompression, and GaitScan orthotics under one roof.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting started and getting our name out there was the hardest thing. We opened our clinic from scratch, and it was a long road to get started.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Being persistent, putting others first, and don't be afraid to invest. It was difficult in the start to get our names out there, but being consistent and persistent was important. When I graduated from chiropractic school, I took an oath to put our patients first, and that is one thing that drives our practice. If you build it, then they will come. We invest in some of the most advanced healing therapies because we want the best for our patients.
