What's your business, and who are your customers?
I provide occupational therapy services to the pediatric population from birth through 21 years of age. Diagnoses vary.
Tell us about yourself
I started as an occupational therapy assistant in pediatrics. I loved what I was doing and explored many settings: schools, medical hospitals, psych hospitals, group homes, outpatient, early intervention, home care, and inpatient. I decided to become an occupational therapist to further my education; I became a feeding and sensory integration specialist. I started my own business to give families and children quality care vs. quantity. I wanted to spend time with them as needed and not rush treatment to follow corporate needs. I continue to stay motivated and empowered by the positive feedback I receive from families and the progress I observe from each of my clients, helping them to be independent and love their life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Becoming an independent provider who is taking on multiple roles: the owner, the therapist, the biller, and the secretary.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning to embrace ownership and individuality. Leaving the corporate mindset as an employee. As a business owner, you have the flexibility to use your own creativity without judgment.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Always make a business plan, formulate a list of what takes precedence and needs to be completed first, talk to your colleagues and learn your clientele's needs and wants. Think as the client, not as an owner; how would you like to be treated?
