ABA Therapy and Evaluations - Autism Centers of Tennessee

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morgan Adair, Business Director of Autism Centers of Tennessee, located in Memphis, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an ABA clinic for children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We work hard to ensure our staff are highly trained and fully understand every client they work with. What sets you apart from others? We place a large emphasis on training. We send our staff to training each year and expect them to implement it in the clinic and share it with the rest of the staff. We have team meetings monthly for new training.

We have individual meetings with the Clinic Director to research new methods and learn the most up-to-date theories in ABA. People know when their child comes to Autism Centers of Tennessee, they get a whole team that cares for their child and is working towards the child’s goals. We pride ourselves on parent collaboration and training.

Tell us about yourself

Our company has two owners. Morgan and Alicia. Morgan is a retired Memphis Police Officer who helped open Autism Centers of Tennessee after falling in love with the field after completing her Psychology degree. Morgan is the integrator/ business director. Alicia is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who runs the clinic as the Clinical Director.

Our field can be difficult, but it is the most satisfying when you see the progress our children are making due to our consistency. Seeing our kiddos hit their targets is very motivating to us, along with the confirmation from parents who are seeing great changes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We love working with our clients, but our staff is our biggest accomplishment! We employ several graduate students who are learning in this field to become leaders, and their growth is by far our biggest accomplishment. We really pride ourselves on growing wonderful BCBAs for our field.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult thing for us would be telling prospective clients that we don't have openings. Our waiting list can get very lengthy, and we desperately wish we could start each client from the moment they contact us. The stories our parents tell us during the intake process will really tug at your heartstrings.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your local Vistage group and join! Having a group of peers to run ideas by and professional speakers is worth the cost.
  2. Your people are the most important aspect of your business. Listen to them, respect them, and collaborate with them as they are the ones who know what happens on the front lines of your business.
  3. You have to be a lifetime learner. You're constantly looking to learn from others, searching for conferences, and ensuring your place is up-to-date and running on the most evidence-based theories.
