Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion and clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Abigaïl Theano-Pudwill, founder of Auxvoir Style Collective, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Abigaïl (Biggie) Theano-Pudwill; I am the founder of Auxvoir Style Collective. Auxvoir services range from personal shopping and wardrobe consultations to event styling and photoshoot direction, available both online and in-person. I curate representative style stories for clients using what they own and secondhand or vintage pieces supplemented by ethical, sustainable, and local items.

My client is almost anyone who gets dressed. They are people who care about their impact on the environment, want to develop their personal style, and learn how to maximize their wardrobe, so they get dressed with ease. My clients also include sustainably-minded small businesses who want to elevate their brand’s visuals, don’t have the time or expertise to plan, style, and direct shoots, and want to ensure they get the shots they need. It’s called a style collective because I collaborate with local shops and creatives to provide my clients with a network of sustainable options.

Tell us about yourself

I am a storyteller with many mediums. Style has always been a way to showcase who I am. Most importantly, it’s fun! My introduction to sustainable fashion wasn’t a choice; it was a necessity. I am a refugee from a lower socioeconomic background. Growing up, my clothes were primarily secondhand or fast fashion dupes of the name brands I couldn’t afford. I had to be creative with my stylistic expression. Once I learned about fast fashion’s environmental impact and the mistreatment of garment workers, sustainable and ethical style became a necessity.

I began Auxvoir Style Collective after opportunities to style and shop for students and shoot direct for a small business. I want to simplify getting dressed, reduce anxiety around shopping and pursue fashion sustainably. Photoshoot styling and direction were a natural development through modeling. Through Auxvoir, I tell stories with my favourite medium and make sustainable style approachable.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is something I continue to aim for; it’s my clients’ and followers’ changed mindsets. It’s incredible to hear someone say I inspired them to stop shopping for months when they never thought that was a possibility. I’ve loved seeing clients who came into the consultation insecure about their style come out of it, literally dancing and excited to get dressed. Best of all is helping people believe that sustainable style is not only within their grasp; it’s easier and cheaper than they think.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Believing that success is truly attainable and that you are an integral part of that. This is a new side venture for me. The growth has been slow and inconsistent. At times I’ve wanted to give up, but it’s important to believe I offer something valuable with a unique perspective. That belief will power the consistency, confidence, and creativity you need. It will also attract others who believe in you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Accountability - Especially if you are a sole owner, it’s easy to let yourself off the hook or feel lost. Hold yourself accountable to your goals either through reflection meetings or an accountability partner. To know you’re on track, you have to know your goals, vision, and purpose.
  2. Gratitude- You can’t build a business alone. Remember to take time to thank those who help you in an intentional way. It can be a handwritten note, a small treat, or an experience. As a small business, every person who lends a hand makes a big impact, do the same when thanking them.
  3. Dream - No matter what point you are at, it’s important to dream. You can get stuck in the day-to-day and stunt your potential growth. If you’re creative, imagine your company in an ideal world. If you’re more practical, research the best in your field. Be inspired, see what’s possible, and remember there’s more to come.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Aim for an impactful purpose rather than a rigid goal. Flexibility is key to your business’ development. I’ve found that some doors will open that you never expected, and your dreams expand and narrow for the better. Thank you so much for the opportunity to share pieces of my business journey!
