Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skin care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Camille Chulick, Co-Founder of Averr Aglow, located in Duluth, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of the beauty/lifestyle brand Averr Aglow. We primarily create skincare products but offer body care products as well. All of our formulas are heavily researched and created thoughtfully with natural ingredients that are proven to work. My customers are those who suffer from skin issues (specifically acne) and want clean products to help transform their skin.

Tell us about yourself

I decided to start Averr Aglow after years of being frustrated with my skin. I had extremely stubborn acne caused by PCOS that wouldn't go away no matter what I did- I went to doctors, dermatologists, and nutritionists and tried every "miracle" product on the market. Nothing helped. I finally began my own research into skincare and started formulating my own products, and soon enough, Averr Aglow was born.

What motivates me is the fact that once I gained control over my skin, my confidence skyrocketed. And that's exactly what I want to do for others struggling with their skin. We've gotten so many raving reviews from others who were just like me. They had been struggling with their skin for years, and Averr Aglow was the only thing that finally helped them. It makes me so happy to help other people overcome these struggles, and that keeps me motivated every day to keep doing what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is probably seeing the results our products have on our customers. They've come to us battling every concern, from scarring and inflammation to cystic acne and hyperpigmentation, and it's so rewarding to see how we've been able to help them be more confident by gaining control over their skin. It is such an honor to see their journey and become a part of their lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part about being a business owner is the mental aspect you go through building it. In the beginning, there is no proof that what you are working on will work. You could invest all this time for it to be a failure. When this happens, you can question yourself if you are good enough to become successful or if you should just throw in the towel. I have asked myself many times if I am good enough to figure this out and be successful. The self-doubt comes in and says what if you never make it? What if this is all a pipe dream? The reality is failure is a better teacher than success, and it is something that if you keep working on, you will learn, pivot, and adjust. For me, it's not about just having a successful skincare business; it's about growing on the failures and learning from them. That's true success to me. When you pick yourself up despite everything you have gone through - financial cash flow, negativity, self-doubt, and failures that can turn all of that into the drive to keep going. Does that mean it doesn't hurt to go and grow through challenges? Yes, but when you get to the other side of pushing past that, it can lead to beautiful growth, happiness, and true success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. One of the best tips I would give to someone is simply to "just start." When first starting a business, many people get caught up in all the minor details and try to make everything perfect right off the bat. In reality, nothing is perfect, and you will always be continuously improving your brand based on things like client feedback and the changing retail landscape. You are bound to make some mistakes along the way, so it's best to just rip off the band-aid and start.
  2. Business owners can get caught up in their needs versus what the customers want or need. Remember starting a business is meeting the needs of your clients better than your competitor. So, how, as a new business, can you go above and beyond the current competition? Why should anyone choose what you are selling? Is your service better, is your quality better, etc.? Remember to make sure, though, that you're focusing on the needs of your clients, not just what you want to make.
  3. Test Everything - You may think something isn't good, or it will flop, or it doesn't look good enough, but the client responds really well. I have had my beliefs broken many times by testing and trying new things. Do not be afraid to fail. Most tests won't work, but there will be something that works so well and will be worth pushing boundaries.
