Menopause & Beyond - b-untethered

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anissa Buckley, President, and Founder of b-untethered, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At 46, I began traveling the world nomadically. I summitted multiple 19k foot mountains, completed Ironman events, and was in the best shape of my life by 50. From here, I built a company, b-untethered to create science-based tools and programs to help other women come through midlife and menopause more easily and feel better than they've been led they can at this stage of life. We are shattering the myth that pre-menopause is the best version of a woman that there will ever be.

Tell us about yourself

I founded the first nutrition database, healthyAisles, to score products in grocery stores for claims - like gluten-free, good source fiber, etc. - and sold that to a shelf tag printing company. That was my first business, and that background lent itself to creating the app - rule meno - that helps personalized a woman's diet and fitness plan based on her biostats. I love helping other women feel better, have more energy, and explore more at this phase of life than they ever thought possible.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was invited to the White House to meet with the Obama's personal chef and to talk about strategies for helping the American population be healthier.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is knowing when to say yes to and when to say no to. There are so many options every day for how to build your business, and sometimes the best decision is just to step away and NOT jump into everything at once.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid plan and execute it as well as you can.
  2. But - be ready to alter your course if the results are not what you want or need.
  3. Of course, the most obvious tip is to watch your cash flow closely, as that can make or break you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There is nothing better than creating something that helps others. It's a bonus to have another company think so highly of what you've done that they acquire you.
