What's your business, and who are your customers?
I create custom art for my animal-loving clients as well as illustrating books for animal-loving authors. I am finally pursuing my original stories: "Last Instinct," a graphic novel & "Dogmom Chronicles," an illustrated short story. My supporters either find me through animal rescue, word of mouth from fellow dog parents, or from the 45 books I've had the honor to illustrate in the last decade.
Tell us about yourself
When I was 4 years old, I realized I was meant to be vegan and a dog mom. Everything I've done since then is to honor animals, create art for the people who love them, and find ways to create, produce and consume in sustainable, kind, and evolving ways in a cruel world. My love of animals drives me and my ultimate goal of opening an animal and creative Sanctuary- Peace Pointe - someday.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having illustrated 45 books and tens of thousands of portraits before the age of 32 enabled me to rescue 6 dogs and give them a loving home.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Self-motivation. As a self-employed freelance illustrator, I rely 100% on myself for everything. I communicate directly with every client, negotiate and write all my contracts, and have to be my own advocate while always finding ways to give back to animals in need.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If you are able to, don't turn down work, you morally agree with, even if the budget isn't what you'd like it to be.
- Find ways to give your art/craft/time to good causes.
- Adopt a dog ;)
