Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel DiLascia, Owner and Founder of Base Wealth Management, located in Lakewood Ranch, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We provide financial advisory and wealth management services to help prepare families and individuals for a successful retirement. Our clients are typically well-off or are highly motivated to make the most of their retirement savings abilities to grow their wealth. They are located across Florida and the nation.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up in Upstate NY. My father owned an Italian Bakery called DiLascia's Bakery. The slogan was, 'If it's DiLascia's, It's Delicious.' I used to work in the summers with my father, and he would say, "I'm in the dough business, but it's the wrong color dough!" When I was deciding on a major at Siena College, my father's line inspired me to go into finance, aka the green-colored dough.
What truly motivates and drives me as a financial advisor is the opportunity to positively impact my clients' financial well-being. I truly enjoy watching them head into retirement, better off than they were before they met me, confident in their financial future.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I don't think I've ever watched a Woody Allen movie, but there's one quote I've heard that has always stuck with me: "80% of success in life is just showing up."
I think the biggest key to success for business owners is simply to show up and be patient and persistent. Success is in the routine of working on something every day. Not everyone can do that.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Most small business owners like control, so letting go and having someone else do things is often difficult. I need to trust that they will get things right the first time. This gives me more time to focus on what strategies will work best with each of my clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Invest in yourself. One of the most crucial aspects of running a successful business is investing in your own personal growth and development. You become more effective and well-rounded, capable of making informed decisions and driving your business forward.
- Experiment and make adjustments. The investing landscape is constantly evolving, and being innovative is essential to stay ahead of the curve. Especially when it comes to other people's money. People trust you with their life savings, so an unemotional, evidence-based system of experimentation is vital to providing long-term growth and remaining competitive.
- Delegate. As a business owner, it's so important to look past your own ego and truly recognize your strengths and weaknesses. Instead of trying to be a jack-of-all-trades, focus on your best areas and surround yourself with people who are smarter or more competent than you in other areas.
