Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Margaret Mackintosh, owner of Beaulance Natural Skin Care, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My Business is Beaulance Natural Skin Care. This is my 22nd year in operation! I specialize in clean, body-friendly, super healthy, effective, and affordable skincare products for the entire family. All products are handcrafted, according to tradition, with no compromises, and in small batches. They are free of commercially used ingredients, such as chemicals, cheap fillers, perfumes, alcohol, parabens, and others that are commonly found in commercial products.

Tell us about yourself

Back in 1999, I was reflecting on a new line of work that would interest and engage me while offering a service or product that would be meaningful and helpful to others. I was then guided to a magazine article on essential oils. This was the genesis of my small, local business!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a small business owner has to be that I have established a loyal customer/client base who really appreciate and benefit from our products. These repeat customers always refer others to Beaulance, thereby helping me greatly to become established. After 22 years, I have maintained my original mission to create products that contribute to the health and happiness of the end-user, which in turn offers an environmental benefit as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would have to say not to succumb to pressure from many directions to "go big or go home...", which always entails compromising the quality/integrity of the products and one's brand name.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do enough research to know your clients' needs and to ensure that your product/service meets them and hopefully exceeds them!
  2. Always over-deliver in order to set yourself apart from the pack!
  3. Truly care about your clients/customers and maintain a state of integrity and honesty for their highest good. Even if you were to 'lose' a little along the way, your gains from dedicated, happy customers will more than compensate for any short-term losses! Slow and steady wins the race! Win-Win!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I will add that bringing a spiritual perspective into your business will deeply enrich your experience and your business growth and will enhance the lives of others.
