Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ron Robinson, founder, and CEO of BeautyStat, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

BeautyStat is a cosmetic, chemist-founded prestige skincare brand. BeautyStat has grown rapidly as a company, developing a whole line of award-winning skincare products, from the Universal Skin Refiner to eye cream, cleanser, moisturizer, face peel, and now sunscreen. The line has won 11 beauty awards from Allure, Good Housekeeping, and Women's Health. BeautyStat has found tremendous success on-shelf as it expands its distribution into several retailers. Most notably, ULTA Beauty. This year alone, as a direct result of its sales performance, over-delivering on the sales forecast, BeautyStat went from being in 260 ULTA Beauty doors to over 1,300 doors nationwide.

Tell us about yourself

As a cosmetic chemist, I have been recognized as one of the world's leading experts in my field. My goal has always been to develop a revolutionary new technology that can stabilize active ingredients, such as pure vitamin C. Throughout my entire career; I have dedicated myself to solving this problem, spending five long years in the lab working towards a solution. Finally, I succeeded in creating the world's first 20 percent stable vitamin C serum, the Universal C Skin Refiner, which became the foundation for my brand, BeautyStat. I am proud to say that no other product on the market contains the same potency as my serum.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm most proud of our vitamin C serum, Universal C Skin Refiner. It solves a big consumer need for a stabilizing pure vitamin C (using patented technology, it does not oxidize or turn orange like many vitamin C serums on the market) while it is clinically tested and dermatologist approved to reduce lines and wrinkles, firm and tighten skin, visibly fade hyper-pigmentation and reduce the look of pores. It's one of the most powerful vitamin C serums on the market, with 20% pure, patented, stable vitamin C. It has made such a difference in my skin, and I can't live without it. We just recently launched a day version of that product that combines 20% of our pure, patented vitamin C technology along with an SPF50 mineral sunscreen, providing the consumer with both total protection and total correction.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur is realizing that some things are out of your control. The economy, retail, digital, and social are all things that can change, and the best entrepreneurs are able to ride out those waves.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My three tips:

  1. Make sure your brand/products have a strong market fit.
  2. Make sure to form the company to allow for growth and capital investment.
  3. Bootstrap your company as long as you can until you gain traction, then raise capital if you need to.
