Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jim Taylor, Founder and CEO of Benchmark Sixty Restaurant Services, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Benchmark Sixty, we work with restaurant operators all over the world. There are two very specific strategies that we provide support on in an effort to address the biggest challenges in the restaurant industry:

  1. We support work with restaurants to help them understand, measure and improve overall business productivity in order to negate rising costs without raising prices or changing service models.
  2. We work with operators to help them understand how employee workload affects their business. Measuring and protecting employee workload in order to reduce burnout and lower turnover.

Tell us about yourself

After 20+ years in restaurant operations, I realized I wanted to do more. I wanted to help the industry look through a new lens and find innovative ways to move forward. I am motivated to think differently, protect people, and change restaurants in an effort to provide a better experience for the next generation of restaurateurs.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment personally as a business owner so far has been the result we have been able to achieve with our clients. Working with over 200 individual restaurants in 2022 and finding millions of dollars of opportunity has been very rewarding and a lot of fun.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, you quickly realize that your education wasn’t actually your education. There is always so much to learn and so many options in front of you that knowing what to focus on and where to spend time can be difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find as specific a niche as you possibly can.
  2. Find or create a content strategy that creates opportunities and shares on multiple platforms every day.
  3. Constant learning is required to stay current, make good decisions, and battle imposter syndrome.
