Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bertha Campbell, Founder of Institute for Optimal Healing and Aesthetics, located in Oakland Park, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A Wholistic One-Stop Shop. We strive to provide a more wholistic approach to patients. The inspiration behind the approach is that the current medical system is not working or healing individuals properly. Our Mission Statement is "Great medical care is personalized care. "We have expanded services to also change our patients' lives on the outside through aesthetics to be able to give them everything they need to feel and look their best, optimally. Our customers are looking for a different approach to medicine- an approach where healing is at the center of their care, and they are heard.

Tell us about yourself

I am Bertha Osorio-Campbell, the founder of The Institute for Optimal Healing and Aesthetics. I started this venture in January 2020 after being laid off from my nurse practitioner position. I felt that I needed to offer more to my patients, and I knew that I wouldn't find a job that would let me practice medicine the way I wanted to. Little did I know that the COVID-19 pandemic was about to hit the world. Despite the lack of PPE and safety protocols, I decided to offer COVID-19 concierge services in patients' homes. This included testing, IV Vitamin infusions, and caring for COVID-positive patients to prevent hospitalization. It was a challenging but rewarding experience. During the lockdown, I helped over 250 patients in the comfort of their homes, and that was just the beginning of The Institute's journey.

When the world opened up, I started offering aesthetic services like botox, fillers, and PRP hair restoration. In December 2021, I purchased the Cutera XEO. By March 2021, I had my grand opening at my new state-of-the-art facility in Oakland Park, FL. We strive to provide a more wholistic approach to patients. The inspiration behind the approach is that the current medical system is not working or healing individuals properly. Patients are not getting or feeling better, and it is a SICK care approach to medicine. Our Mission Statement is "Great medical care is personalized care." I am an advanced practice registered nurse and have seen that the conventional and traditional approach of medicine does not help my patients the way they need help. I wanted to help more of my community understand healthier ways of living and getting rid of certain illnesses.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business has taken itself to another level by opening an actual medical clinic located in just one year of expansion, and that has made me very proud to see my very own community clinic where locals can come to get treated and learn to take a wholistic approach without being turned around or convinced it's wrong. In June of 2021, when my brick-and-mortar business was only 3 months old, I decided I wanted to be a mother again to a daughter and decided to do it as a solo mom by choice. I knew my business, which was in its infancy, was going to struggle a bit, but I also had my biological clock telling me it was now or never. My pregnancy took a direction I was not expecting and left me out of commission for about 7-9 months. The times that I was in the office- it was just a body because, mentally, I was not there. I suffered from pregnancy depression, and I gave up on everything. I am not even sure how my business survived those months with barely any revenue, but if it's one thing I know that I am PROUD of, its the fact that I made my dream a reality of having a beautiful baby girl as a solo mom by choice and now still having a business that I can build a legacy for my children.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is how lonely the road to the top is and finding competent, consistent, and loyal employees that are willing to show up and eager to grow the business with me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For those who want to grow a business, I would advise to make sure you have the capital and enough cash flow to sustain you for at least 3-6 months. Finances are the biggest stressor for any business owner, and it is what runs the business and also how you survive. Fear will only hold you back, so make sure, even with all the fear to just do it. The journey is the hardest thing you will ever do, but the reward is more than you could ever imagine.
