Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Max Winders, co-founder of BetterFed Beef, located in Paynesville, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

BetterFed Beef was created to bring the youngest, most tender, most consistent beef directly to your home so that American consumers can enjoy unparalleled 100% US Beef. At BetterFed Beef, we cut out the giant big packers and middlemen, bringing our exceptional beef directly to you. Midwest farmer-owned. Our cattle are raised with great care and pride.

Tell us about yourself

On a fishing trip with my great friend and partner, Dr. Tom Peters. We kicked around the idea of bringing the absolute best beef directly to American households via a direct-to-consumer e-business. Bypass the big meatpackers, the middlemen distributors, wholesalers, and supermarkets and build a direct connection between our cattlemen-owner families and the consumer. Let's use technology to create a virtual relationship between the farm family that raises and cares for the cattle and the American consumer who's enjoying this fabulous beef. Full transparency, traceability, and trust. So far, we have been rewarded almost daily with customers telling us they have never experienced beef so good... so tender. And to make it official, NDSU Meat Science Department completed a study comparing our certified ONYA beef to American WAGYU beef, which is the 'gold standard.' Incredibly, our beef was equally tender as the exceptional Wagyu beef but is much more affordable for families to enjoy. This has been very satisfying to everyone involved with BetterFed Beef, a nice validation of our wonderful beef and how they have been cared for.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking the idea from a bar napkin to commercial reality. We launched in AUG 2021.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Bearing the ultimate responsibility and obligation to the owner-investors who have placed their trust in the business concept and in myself and Tom.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a good conservative business plan.
  2. Be prepared to fail fast and reorient.
  3. Adapt, implement, repeat.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Our business is unique in many aspects. Perhaps most meaningful is the 17 cattle producer families that are also owners in BetterFed Beef. They are investing in this direct-to-consumer business for their business survival, for their children and grandchildren to carry on the legacy and tradition of raising beautiful cattle. We share the faith that more and more Americans who love exceptional beef will also wish to know where their beef came from, who raised it and how the cattle were cared for. BetterFed Beef is built for this purpose.
