Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alyssha Yeatheard, founder of Bewitched Aromas, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bewitched Aromas focuses on combining luxury self-care with the magic of crystals. We create candles and homeware inspired by the beauty of different crystals, and we love creating unique fragrance combinations! Our candles + wax melts are hand poured with luxurious coconut soy wax and fine fragrance oils. We use cozy crackling wooden wicks that give off an undeniable ambiance. We choose aesthetic glassware and create our cement collection in the house. There is something for everyone, no matter what your decor style is! Non Toxic self-care is where it's at, so we wanted to ensure that our products are free of parabens, paraffin, phthalates, and carcinogens and be pet safe and vegan friendly!

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the beauty industry for ten years. I'm an educator for a Clinical Esthetician and Laser Technician program, and I own a Lash and Brow Studio! When COVID hit, this industry was shut down, so with all of this free time on my hands, I was constantly having wax melts going in my home and thought to myself, hmm, I wonder if I could make these! I watched hours of YouTube. I experimented with many types of wax and fragrance until I was happy with my final wax melt creation. My close friends and family were so supportive. With great feedback, I decided to open Bewitched Aromas in my home studio, Bewitched Beauty Boutique! Eventually, diving into the world of candles and crystals and self-care, my business has grown into so much more than just wax melts, and I love how creative and hands-on it is.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love hearing reviews from customers and return customers, as well as seeing my product expanding into retail spaces and boutiques in Edmonton and the surrounding area! And just being a business owner, in general, is so rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think wearing the many hats and responsibilities there is of running a one-woman show! Being the photographer, order packer, content creator, product maker, delivery driver, website creator! It has been a learning curve for sure, and it is a 24/7 job!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. So many! Don't let your vision of your brand be influenced by anyone! You may have many outside opinions on what your business should look like and the products you sell, packaging, etc., but in the end, it's your creative process, and do what feels right for you!
  2. Set boundaries for yourself, and don't forget to take care of yourself! I find myself pouring candles or packing orders at midnight many nights, knowing I have to be up for work in the morning! Setting expectations for your customers on your website can be helpful " orders ship out in 3-5 business days" I usually get them out in 1 or 2, but it sets the tone that we as small business owners are not a next day delivery service.
  3. Just Start! Your business will grow and evolve along the way, and that's okay! You can always start with something small while in the testing phase of other products. I think I redesigned my logo about ten times along the way, but if you have a great product and passion, people will notice!
