Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bhanu Harrison, owner of Choosing Mindfulness, located in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, NM, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As an educator, mindfulness facilitator, and clinical social worker, I work with individuals, professionals, and groups to share practical tools and skills to resolve trauma and live a more balanced, joyful life.

Tell us about yourself

My solo career has evolved over the decades. I practiced for 11 yrs as a licensed bodyworker and began to teach at a massage therapy school, which ended up as a 34 yr stint! When my hands began to wear out from doing massage therapy, I went back to school to get my Master's in Social Work. My focus for the last 25 years has been mindful, body-centered trauma resolution for individual clients. I'm shifting my role now into my teaching and education for individuals, social workers, counselors, and really anyone who wants to learn about their body, nervous system, mind, and heart. The amazing shifts that students and clients have shared with me, witnessing how their life has changed for the better, and seeing long-lasting positive growth keep me motivated to share what I've learned in my life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm a one-woman show and have been self-employed since 1984! My latest fun work activity has been teaching mindfulness on the Insight Timer app. I have people from all over the world join to listen to my practices and live sessions! It's very rewarding!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a solo business owner, I am responsible for all aspects of my work. With that responsibility comes a strong work ethic, integrity, and a commitment to do well for my clients. And I have to take very deep care of my own well-being since no one else can step into my shoes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. No experience in your life is wasted. All the skills you have learned will contribute to your overall success.
  2. Know yourself! Understanding your nervous system, emotions, and triggers and having the tools to keep yourself balanced and regulated.
  3. Find work that inspires you and keeps you on a lifelong learning journey.
