Creating Original Concept Fine Jewelry - Bijules

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jules Kim, Founder of Bijules, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an independent fine jewelry brand, Bijules. My clients are specific and stylish, with an overall need to shine at their core. There are many options to accentuate individualism through jewelry, so I hope to create a consistent and alternative approach for my base.

Tell us about yourself

I started handmaking silver custom graffiti nameplates in the early aughts of NYC nightlife. As a DJ/promoter, I'd wear a literal handful of rings to the club and sell them from behind the booth or on the dance floor. It was something else to be able to share these moments with other like-minded artists and risk-takers of the era. As an artist, I am stoked to constantly create and provide a service that is steeped in authenticity. I do not believe we should be making anything if it is not intended to highlight a positive impact and a deep belief in something.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner is to be relevant and able to contribute my point of view to the world for over 20 years. The legacy I have built is founded on a real effort to build community and influence culture.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I am a believer and practitioner in presenting adversity as part of one's journey and development. I have learned, like many, through trial and error because I was not born into generational wealth or an established system that filters into the luxury industry. I came into the jewelry and fashion world from the underground and, therefore, acknowledge my path as unique and disruptive. Thank God!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask for help, no matter how painful.
  2. Be/ stay humble. No one likes a snot.
  3. Continue to fail.
