Your Skin Is Alive™ - BIOMILK Skincare

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and beauty but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie Raeburn, co-founder of BIOMILK Skincare, located in Menlo Park, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

BIOMILK Biome Nutrition Skincare exists to provide 100% clean, healthy, probiotics + prebiotics + plant-based superfoods-fueled skincare to active people who want accessibly-priced optimal skincare products. Most active folks are already familiar with the microbiome and/or probiotics in the context of digestive health (e.g., probiotic supplements for improving gut health), but did you know you have a unique bacterial ecosystem on the surface of your skin? When our skin microbiome gets out of balance (e.g., UV, pollution, stress!), we experience everyday skin issues. BIOMILK is here to address the skin's nutritional needs, to provide balance and your healthiest-looking skin ever.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career in consulting and later worked in marketing at a big consumer products company. When my former boss, a beauty product development pro, approached me to launch BIOMILK together, I jumped at the opportunity to co-found my first company! I'm motivated to continue this entrepreneurship journey by the customer feedback we receive (almost all very positive!) and new retailer launches (Whole Foods this month!).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is continuing to hang in there and stay positive and motivated after years of ups and downs!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is being my own biggest critic - I always have to remind myself to celebrate small victories before I keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Consider outsourcing key functions, such as content creation, assuming you can find a part-time person or reputable agency to help. Raise or borrow money early - as soon as you need it and can access it. Find a community of fellow entrepreneurs to discuss best practices and potentially share resources.
