Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Malisa Chhoeun, co-founder of Black Daisies Jewelry, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our pieces are more than just jewelry. We see them as talismans, and each one of them has a story to tell. They're inspired by our experiences in society, and with our imagination, we interpret them into our own parallel universe. We like to put a spin on life to keep things interesting for ourselves and our fans.

Our customers are enthusiastic beings that have a deep appreciation for art. They like to feel a connection with the creators and the jewelry itself. They're sentimental collectors, and so are we. Our jewelry is all hand-sculpted using the lost-wax technique. It's a traditional technique that consists of carving directly into a hard block of wax. With that said, each piece has a trace of human hands and, therefore, defies the modern age of 3D printing.

Tell us about yourself

We're a team of two silversmiths & designers for Black Daisies Jewelry: Malisa Chhoeun & Andy Huddy. My artistic path was all over the place: I delved into graphic design, illustration, fashion design, and silversmithing. At one point, we had to make something out of these acquired skills. So we put our minds together and created our world of Black Daisies Jewelry. Our motivation is simply driven by our urge to always have fun & to create cool stuff!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having a deep & genuine connection with our fans! Because without them, we wouldn't have a business and, most of all, a wonderful community that we call "home"

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling tasks as we do everything ourselves: photography, graphics, website building, sculptures, customer service, etc... But our philosophy is there is nothing hard in life, just obstacles and a big to-do list!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. One thing at a time.
  2. Always plan ahead.
  3. Be genuine.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Whatever you do, always remember to have fun and stay true to yourself.
