What's your business, and who are your customers?
Bloom 24 floristry is a flower shop/plant store. We make custom flower arrangements for any occasion, and we also carry quite an extensive collection of house plants. Our customers are either after the refreshing yet novel modern style of flower arranging or hunting down some rare tropical plants.
Tell us about yourself
Flower, plant, anytime, anywhere is my mantra for opening this shop, and seeing how much people appreciate our creation is the most rewarding thing a florist could ever ask for. Also, the tropical house plant community in Halifax is so full of passion and love; we have so much support from the best two groups of people, flower friends, and plant pals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a small woman-run business, starting from zero and surviving the pandemic is quite remarkable, in my opinion. There were lots of things we had to teach ourselves as we were building our company from the ground up. The journey has been challenging yet filled with surprises and so many heart-touching moments, and being able to experience that is the greatest accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
To quote the viral TikTok, “I skipped 9 to 5 to work 24/7”. As an owner of a small business where we do everything ourselves, the work-life balance has been difficult. You don’t have the luxury of walking out of work and just stopping thinking about it. It’s always in the back of my mind to come up with new ideas, new strategies, what posts we should make on our socials, etc., so the boundary between work and life is very blurred for me. On top of that, we take great pride in customer satisfaction, so very frequently, my personal time is sacrificed so we can cater to our guests, as I said, flower, plant, anytime, anywhere.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Find the right market and know your worth. Put the right people on your side. Think about the road ahead.
