Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Hunter, Owner of Bloom Birthing & Fertility, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bloom Birthing and Fertility is a business that supports women and families in their perinatal (fertility, pregnancy, birth, and/or postpartum) period. I am a fertility coach, birth doula, childbirth educator, and placenta processing specialist serving the Greater Charlotte area of NC. My clients are people who desire mental, physical, emotional, and educational support on their journey to have a baby and grow their families. I'm also a doula mentor and help other doulas become business-savvy birth workers.

Tell us about yourself

I'm quite positive that I was born with birth in my spirit. I've been obsessed with pregnancy and childbirth for as long as I can remember. I grew up thinking I wanted to be an obstetrician but ultimately decided that med school was not for me. It took me two children, secondary infertility challenges, and 13 years before I circled back around to birth and eventually learned what a doula was. I had unknowingly been a doula for friends and family for years, standing beside them while pregnant and coaching them in birth. I quickly became certified and had been supporting families ever since. Each day, I'm motivated by the knowledge that I'm changing lives and the face of birth.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to rise above it all. Being an entrepreneur isn't easy and comes with a lot of challenges, everything from unsolicited opinions to self-doubt. Recognizing that I am doing what I meant to do, in the way that I choose to do it, has been key in my business, life, and the community I serve.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is sharing "my baby" with the world. It's not easy to create, nurture, and grow a tiny thought into a full-blown business that you believe will be accepted by others. I remember when I was first certified, I didn't know the first thing about owning a business, and it took years to get away from calling it "my side hustle" or "my little business on the side." It was hard for me to accept that I was a whole business owner and rocking it! It wasn't until I believed in myself, my business, and my expertise that I could be fearlessly open about my business and openly share it with others without fear.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the leap, and don't put it off. Know that you can do it.
  2. Be you. Don't compare yourself or your business to others.
  3. Find mentors that not only have experience but truly believe in what you're doing.
