Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nikki Hunter-Greenaway, Founder of Bloom Maternal Health, located in Katy, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bloom Maternal Health is a community wellness practice providing patient-centered care, evidenced-based perinatal education, and full-spectrum support to Black and Brown families before, during, and after pregnancy.

Tell us about yourself

Over 12 years, I started a small CPR education business. After the birth of my child and almost losing him to sepsis, I started teaching parents CPR. I quickly realized while in the midst of parenting, running a business, and being a partner that postpartum parents needed so much more than CPR classes. They needed to be healed physically and emotionally but on their terms. I was encouraged to be the change I wanted to see. Bloom Maternal Health provides home and virtual visits to families when they need them most.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is learning discernment and discipline. What needs to be done right now? What is the best use of my time that has the greatest impact on the needs of pregnant and post-baby families?

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about running my business is the juxtaposition of managing my household. It is challenging to be all in for other families and balance an “all-in” attitude for my family as well. Balance is not attainable, but consistent discipline is achievable with 24/7 work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Lay a solid foundation: this foundation is built on your “why,” integrity, and purpose.
  2. Make your business legit: creating a legal entity helps legitimize your venture not just to the world and future clients but to yourself as well.
