Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental health care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Manami Yamamoto, Founder & President of Blue Humming Therapy, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your organization, and who are your members?

We are a nonprofit mental health organization in CA. Our work is driven by our commitment to promoting mental health as a critical part of overall wellness and includes direct counseling services, psycho-education, and prevention services to diverse clients and communities.

Tell us about yourself

I founded Blue Humming Therapy in 2016. I have been working with clients from diverse backgrounds in the hospital, schools, and community mental health settings. From my experience working with many clients, I was shocked to learn about the reality that many clients cannot receive high-quality mental health services because of their economic statuses, races, cultures, and other deeply rooted injustice. I felt a deep sorrow that they held little hope that it would ever be fixed. I feel a strong urge to form a solid function that can offer high-quality mental health services to all clients regardless of their backgrounds and help them ensure their well-being.

What's your biggest accomplishment as an organization?

Our biggest accomplishment is that we provide the appropriate mental health support to diverse clients and communities. We have been working with the communities, and we succeeded in exploring their needs and creating the best mental health support with them together. Clients and communities are empowered with a sense of control over their own well-being instead of just receiving mental health support from professionals.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being an organization?

What has been both challenging and also rewarding for me is how much there is to learn through my work. I realized that many resources and knowledge are often disconnected and integrated. I feel there are great opportunities to maximize the effectiveness and quality of our services if all knowledge and resources are integrated through collaboration with many talents. It sometimes takes time to bloom, but I enjoy this growing process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an organization today?

  1. Set the vision and mission of your work. Clarify why you start your own business.
  2. Imagine your future. Allow yourself to grow with small steps.
  3. Listening to the people around you and appreciating their presence. Having mutual trust and support will lead you further.
