Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Nazzaro, Founder of Blue Skies ADHD, located in Totowa, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Certified ADHD Parenting Coach. I help parents of children with ADHD transform their parenting in a way that builds the parent-child relationship and helps ADHD thrive.

Tell us about yourself

For a long time, I've known that was passion was helping kids and families, which is why I initially went into the field of School Psychology. Before you knew it, I was neck-deep in learning everything special education, IEPs, case management, and counseling for special kiddos with unique brains! However, while training, I've realized two things: the impact of parents and how little support they receive.

Parents of children with ADHD are largely underserved and undervalued, despite how much extra patience, compassion, and education go into parenting these children. There are too many books but not enough guidance on what a parent needs to do to help their child develop the skills and resistance to thrive. Not only that but parenting an ADHD child is a CHALLENGE. Despite the rewards, it always feels like there's another fire to put out or someone is in emotional turmoil.

I saw this as a need that the school system isn't equipped to address. They are there to help the child, but no one's there to help the parent develop the parenting tools and strategies neurodiverse children need.

What motivates me every day is giving parents the tools to show the world what ADHD brains can do when they're properly supported! I want to reframe how we think about ADHD in children one step at a time. As a parenting coach, that's what I help with! I work with parents individually to develop these skills specifically for their child with ADHD, so they can thrive together and have a joyful relationship.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably just getting started! As an ADHDer myself, getting started and taking that leap was, without a doubt, the hardest part. I always have ideas that I never act on, so actually following through and sticking with them is something I'm very proud of - especially because of all the amazing people I've met!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Motivating myself and managing my day. I get so caught up in the small things sometimes that I forget to put the big picture stuff first. I also need a lot of external motivation or encouragement from others, so it was super challenging before I made an effort to find my tribe!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Perfection isn't realistic - aim for "good enough" and just get something out there.
  2. Find your tribe; no one reaches success on their own.
  3. Don't be afraid to pivot if something is no longer serving you.
