Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness for massage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Beret Loncar, owner of Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a small specialized massage therapy clinic in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. We have programs for sports massage, medical massage, lymphatic care, jaw pain/TMD, prenatal massage, and more. We primarily treat patients seeking pain management through manual therapy and athletes. Massage therapy is an excellent non-pharmacological treatment option for those with chronic and episodic pain conditions. While many view massage as a luxury, more and more, it is being seen as a useful pain management tool, especially when combined with appropriate exercise.

Tell us about yourself

I started working in massage as I was interested in medical care but did not want to be a doctor. I had started out in a pre-med track but found that I was not interested in pursuing it, so later, when I went back to school, I chose massage, as it was medical but not in the same way.

I genuinely love solving problems and working with different people every day. As my business has developed and I have hired more people, that wanting to help people has transferred to my staff.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love that we represent a safe space in health care and that our staff is free to be who they are. Over the years, we have fostered a supportive community at our location where everyone is valued for what they do. I really did not like the feeling of being just a cog at some of the places where I had worked, and so we made a big effort to put our staff first. Some of the best ideas we have had are from them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things you have to manage as a business owner is change. It is hard not to get attached to things, but moving on is part of the process. To a certain extent, part of why you get into owning your own business is you like challenges and change, but when you build something, you have to be willing to let it go when it is time, so you can build something new. It takes practice and is its own skill.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fully commit. When your part way in with nothing to lose, it is easy to not give it your all; after all, you have a fallback.
  2. Scale at a rate you are comfortable at. Fully committing does not have to be scary.
  3. Be ready for change. Change is good!
