Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Wilcox, founder of Bold Habit Quest Coaching, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bold Habit Quest Coaching helps gamers to avoid video game/technology addiction. I guide them to level up their health and wellness while creating a life they don't want to escape from anymore.

Between the rise of remote workers, live-streaming, and lucrative e-sports careers (paired with a global pandemic), it's no surprise this is a specific rising arena that requires more preventative healthcare. BHQ offers personal 1:1 coaching, self-paced online courses, and family programs for loved ones looking to support their gamers.

Tell us about yourself

Hi - I'm the owner and head coach at Bold Habit Quest Coaching! My personal life experiences and health journey led me to specialize my coaching practice in video game addiction support. I'm a recovered MMO-addict now serving gamers with community, coaching services, and free wellness education. I want every gamer to feel as powerful as their favorite characters.

Professionally, I'm a dual-certified life and health coach recognized by the ICF (International Coaching Federation). In my spare time, I enjoy delivering talks on all things gaming, hosting/guesting on podcasts, and leading free goal-setting workshops.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was recently invited to my first public speaking engagement at an industry conference. It was a total honor to feel worth sharing my story and advocating for the gaming community. What? People wanna hear that? They want ME specifically to fly and talk about me?! Major imposter syndrome moment, but so rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You're responsible for your growth, income, efforts, and results. While that's incredibly empowering, it also means you will often be in self-development mode and consistently out of your comfort zone (which can be quite draining, so find support!).

It takes a lot of inner work to move past the peaks and valleys that will come up professionally and personally. Your professional growth will challenge your identity, beliefs, routine, and values.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just Start: If you have a combination of skills, passion, and personal experience, you've got a strong foundation for a path that will be far more fulfilling than a conventional job role. Do it; there's no perfect or magically better time. Cliche? Maybe, but painfully true.
  2. Done Not Perfect: Get comfortable letting go of perfectionist tendencies ASAP, and you'll thrive so much quicker! We call this taking imperfect action, and it's really important. Just make sure you're doing something that serves your growth. Taking consistent small steps (even if they're not perfect) is so much better than getting stuck overanalyzing things and going into a freeze response.
  3. Support + Accountability: You'll always need these things in place as a solopreneur if you want to fast-track your success. Your new adventures may not resonate with the 9-5ers around you. Find and surround yourself with entrepreneurs and other big dreamers. Verbalize your goals with them, and check in with each other! They'll cheer you on. If it weren't for some of my peers, I definitely would've given up on myself early on.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Celebrate ALL of your wins! Even the smallest ones. Open a business banking account? Treat yourself to your favorite snack. There's very little external validation when you ARE your own boss. Don't forget you're amazing for pushing forward and enjoying all the little milestones of building your business along the way. šŸŽ‰
