Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayla Zemek, co-founder of Bone to Broth Inc., located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bone to Broth Inc. is based out of Okotoks, AB. We are a two-mom show that has busted our butts to educate and supply families with nutrient-rich bone broth while supporting Alberta farmers.

Tell us about yourself

We wanted to provide our families and those around us with real foods that nourish and cleanse our bodies naturally. We started doing this after noticing how often people around us were unaware of the benefits of clean eating, collagen, and the amino acids that are found in gut-healing bone broth. We are often told how much our product has changed people's lives. We have seen it first hand in our own homes as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In November of this year, we took on a very big audit. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) is a food safety management system that's recognized around the globe. Obtaining a HACCP certification provides assurance to the public that an establishment has a proper food safety program in place that ensures risks to food safety are controlled to a point where food and ingredients are safe for consumption. We worked on this for nine months. This audit allowed us to move into the retail sector. We now are able to sell Bone to Broth bone broth at Sobeys and Safeway across Alberta.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For us, it is social media. We work very hard in the kitchen every week (there are only 2 of us, and we supply 20 stores and also have our online sales, And we both have two young boys each), so making the time for social media on top of all the cooking and paperwork is trying some days.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you truly love what you are doing. We have many hard days. But the days we have customers tell us our product is changing their lives and the lives of their loved ones, it makes it all worth it for us.
  2. Allow your family to enjoy the stages with you. It's important that our boys see that hard work and determination will allow you to flourish. But that doesn't come without struggle "it's only when it rains that we grow."

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We hope our product is an easy addition to your home. Gut health matters; everything steams from your gut. Bone broth isn't a trend; it's a return to tradition.
