From Employee to CEO - Book to Business

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Precious Brown, Founder of Book to Business dba PSBrown Consulting Group, located in Flint, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an online women's business support organization specializing in idea clarity, business launch strategy, accountability, and resource support. Building a business has its own stressors, and our brand partners with those ready to relieve themselves of some of the CEO duties. So, whether that is finding a graphic designer, holding you accountable, or helping you get clear on the next steps of your launch process - we are here to help.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business after a very sudden divorce. I became a single mom to four teenagers and wanted to live the second half of my life differently than the first, so I decided to bet on myself and help other women in the process. I am motivated daily by being a change agent in how women do and build businesses. Seeing the women I serve birth new ideas, reach their goals, transform their lives and be able to assist them in the process - is what keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My most significant accomplishment as a business owner has been supporting over 200 women as they become authors, speakers, and profitable business owners.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is getting started. I believe the beginning stages are the most difficult because it requires a lot of time for learning, growing, clarity and testing. In our society, we are cultivated to get everything quickly - but business is the opposite. I find that a lot of people start a business to "get rich quick," not understanding that there are very few instances of 'overnight" successes. Once you can release the "right now" factor, you will be able to focus on the vision and reach the goal.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There are a million tips I could give, but the top three are:

  1. Be sure and do your research! From your market to the client you want to serve to the product/service you will provide - you must know it and them like the back of your hand.
  2. Focus on YOU! Don't pay any attention to anyone or anything else. Your journey is unique to you. Yes, know what the "perceived competition" is doing but DO NOT fixate on it. Run your business as if it is the ONLY solution to the problem you solve.
  3. Take your time. Building a business is not a sprint; it is a marathon. It will take time to build your audience, your brand, and collaborative relationships and to generate revenue consistently.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Building your business is the most transforming and rewarding task you will take on, and it can also be your most challenging. There are many ups and downs... sometimes all in one day. Everything will not be perfect, but YOU GOT THIS!
