Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jimmy Semrick, Co-Founder of Brella, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is Brella. We make cocktail drops that turn seltzers (Hard or NA) into balanced and complex adult beverages. Our customers are adults that want to accommodate themselves, no matter their location, situation, or host.

Tell us about yourself

I live in Chicago with my wife, Mia, and our two Corgis. I became tired of ordering seltzer with lime and wanted to free myself from what was on the menu. I am motivated by the process -- I love building brands and innovating in the beverage space.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been bringing a product from an idea into reality with the help of incredible partners like The Hatchery Chicago.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing many hats. There are hundreds of subtasks for every project that requires your attention and energy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Walk before you run.
  2. Be sure that you are building a business that the market wants, not that you want. In other words, don't fall in love with your own ideas.
  3. Learn to delegate early - no business (in this space) is a one-person show.
