Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian Baltosiewich, founder of Queen City Podcast Network, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Queen City Podcast Network is a collection of Charlotte-based podcasts about a variety of topics, from news and current events to food, comedy, business, LGTBQ+, and more. Our listeners are Charlotte-area residents who want to keep up with what's happening in their backyard and former Charlotteans living around the world who would like to stay in touch with their hometown.

Tell us about yourself

I spent 28 years in broadcast television and, on the side for 18 years of that time, developing a variety of audio-on-the-internet projects that gradually led me to launch QCPN in 2018. Producing impactful content motivates me, but I am also gratified to provide platforms for people and organizations who otherwise might struggle to be heard. As an added bonus, I get to work with people I admire and respect on projects that mean something.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching Queen City Podcast Network and having it develop into something that has excited the community is our biggest accomplishment. There were plenty of people who didn't see how it could work. We're still standing five years later and about to enter the next phase of the network.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I've learned that there are aspects of running your own business that I am just not good at. I'm creative, and there are administration-type things I just can't do. Admitting that to myself and finding the right people to take on the things I struggle with has been incredibly important.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There's never a perfect time to start a business. If you're waiting for everything to be in place, you're going to wait forever. Leverage the connections you have and just go. The net will appear.
  2. Be ready to work harder than you ever have.
  3. There will always be people who think they know what's best for you and your business. They don't. Only you know what's right for you. Consider advice carefully before you act. More often than not, your instincts will be correct.
  4. Be patient. Nothing happens overnight or on your schedule. Be ready to let things develop on their own schedule, and don't get frustrated when that timeline doesn't match yours.
