Bringing Nature's Bounty in a Jar - Shea Butter Market

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care & cosmetics, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gifty Serbeh-Dunn, owner of  Shea Butter Market, based in Mill Bay, British Columbia.

Tell us all about your business...

Our business manufactures skincare products using shea butter sourced from women's collectives in Northern Ghana. That beautiful, pure shea butter is infused with pure essential oils. We bring nature's bounty in a jar to our customers while supporting the women in Ghana who make the shea butter.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

I was born and raised in Northern Ghana, came to live in Canada, and on a visit to my home, the women asked me to create work for them, and the idea was born. The hard-working women in my home motivate me greatly. They never quit, even under unspeakable strain. I think of them every time things get tough.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Never giving up, resilience even when I get negative messages that what I am doing isn't viable. Reaching so many people with my story and helping generate income for myself and the women in Northern Ghana has been my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

It can be a lonesome road, especially working with limited financial capital.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Firstly, be clear in your vision as the road ahead can be riddled with many challenges. Surround yourself with positive energy to face many challenges, always look at the big picture,  and avoid being egocentric. And lastly, have some degree of detachment so that you can be open to ideas and support.

Where can people find you?
