Build Strength, Break Limits - Motus Training Studios Inc.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Tate, co-founder of Motus Training Studios Inc., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We manage spaces designed for personal fitness professionals that want to welcome the types of clients that traditional health and fitness has left out for too long.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in Human Kinetics. Basically, the mechanics of human movement. I've realized, however, that it's the human element more than the "exercise" element that determines long-term success when it comes to physical and mental health. I'm motivated every day. I get to see my clients and see our customers with their clients, feeling safe enough and confident enough to try new challenges and surprise themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving this pandemic has been pretty awesome because we support professionals that really use exercise therapeutically. We've seen growth in their practices thanks to a more global appreciation for exercise and movement. Of course, coupled with locations that could sustain 1:1 only and now still quite private use made a big difference.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Charging money. We routinely have conversations about the power of exercise and how backward it seems to not have more government and 3rd-party payer support for it. So just coming up with billing practices that ensure the health of our community of users as a whole is a regular challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Feel strongly about the power of what you're offering.
  2. Find (patiently but persistently) professionals and partners that agree.
  3. Work out what you and they need to feel confident about working together to reach the people that need what you're offering.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be curious and compassionate.
