Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Henry O'Loughlin, Founder of Buildremote, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help companies operate remotely. My customers are founders or operations managers at companies with a remote, distributed workforce. They are looking to operate more efficiently without a centralized office.

Tell us about yourself

I ran a fully remote marketing agency for eight years. We had team members all around the world. Just about every idea we had at the beginning turned out to be wrong, and we made adjustments as we went. That turned into a model that I can "The Remote Operating System." It is a framework for operations: processes, KPIs, core values, roles and responsibilities, meeting agendas, etc.).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to work for myself.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The list of ideas and fun things to try out grows much faster than you can tackle them. The biggest challenge is figuring out what to work on and when so you can maximize growth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start the business on the side of your full-time job first. That'll give you an idea if you have a viable opportunity.
  2. Pick one or two things and do them really well and often. Either ignore everything else or outsource hire for it.
  3. Don't pay for an office. You don't need it.
