Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Candice Seaton, Owner of Stolen Moment Photography by Candice, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Stolen Moment Photography by Candice. We do weddings, families, and newborn photos and have been for the last 19 years.

Tell us about yourself

I spent all my school holidays on my grandparents’ farm in Innisfree, Alberta. I remember finding a little plastic Barton-Baby film camera in a drawer, and my grandma said I could keep it. My mom bought me films all the time and always got them developed for me. From the time I was eight years old, I always thought it would be amazing to be a photographer. I never lost my interest in photography, and for my grade twelve graduation, my grandparents bought me my first SLR camera with lenses, where I learned the different manual settings and how the exposure triangle worked.

Fast forward to having four beautiful children, taking a million photos of them, and when my youngest was two, I decided to try to make my hobby a business. I worked so hard those first few years learning how to set up my own website, get clients, advertise, etc. My need for creativity and our amazing clients - some of whom we have had since the beginning, keep me motivated and excited for every shoot. I also love doing concept shoots that I dream up. It’s also been an amazing journey with my best friend/business partner (for 19 years) and, as of 2022, my husband.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to maintain my business for 19 years even through Covid and having clients who have become great friends who come back to us year after year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It’s hard to keep a business thriving in an over-saturated market these days and wearing so many different hats.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion.
  2. Don’t feel the need to compare yourself to every other photographer in your area.
  3. Pave your own way by working hard and being the best you can be.
