Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christina Hart, owner of Candles By Chrissy, located in Greenwood, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a candle company. My customers are all diverse from different backgrounds and cultures. People should support Candles By Chrissy because it’s not just a candle company. We host events geared towards entrepreneurship, networking, small business, minority resources, and much more throughout the year. Our mission at Candles By Chrissy is to bring people together one light at a time.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Christina Hart, and I am a black woman, a single parent with two amazing sons. I wanted to start Candles By Chrissy so I could make extra money on the side for my children. To show them they could own a business as well if that’s what they wanted to do. I started with sugar scrubs for your skin first, then the candles from the number of people were asking me to do them. I also wanted to show other people around me how much entrepreneurship is important right now in the times we are living in. Why would you not want to support a company that supports the community and others? It’s time for a change, and my way is with candles!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Candles By Chrissy's biggest accomplishment is that we were able to gain sponsorship this year from top Indiana organizations. The list goes on, and I thought that was the coolest one yet! We have accomplished a lot being in business for three years and mainly being able to give back in some way! So more great news I can’t say just yet!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner for me is when you're not making sales, it slows down, and you have to keep the business moving. It’s definitely a scary feeling because I’m sure most people who start their business put their personal funds towards the business. You're giving it all you have, and knowing you might not make a sale is hurtful! So my words for the readers are to keep going, and it gets better. I know it’s easier said than done, but you got this! Remember what the goal and plan were from the beginning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You need a business plan, and it’s important and opens so many doors.
  2. Be mentally prepared for the no’s and the people that want to run your business and the setbacks. It happens, and starting a business is not easy, but if you're ok up there, you can make sure you're ok everywhere else.
  3. Find your audience! It’s important to know what you're selling, who you're selling to, and where to find these people. Know about the product or services you're offering, so you know where to find your customers!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Take time out from the business and yourself. Learn how to balance life and work. Know that if you take the important steps to take care of yourself first, everything else will follow!
