Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Barbara Kocher Bapst, Founder of Carolina Nutrition and Wellness, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business provides integrative nutrition counseling services to individuals and nutrition consulting services to groups and corporations. It is focused on a holistic approach to health and well-being. In other words, I use a whole-body approach with each client by starting with a detailed assessment to formulate a specific plan for their unique needs. I strive to dig deep during my interview process with the person, so we can address the root causes of what is going on with them. We work together to figure out attainable goals and at what pace for the individual client. My approach encourages the use of whole foods, supplements, and various stress-reducing techniques and lifestyle changes.

Tell us about yourself

I've been practicing nutrition counseling for over 30 years. Through the years, my role as a nutritionist has changed. I am grateful for the many diversified opportunities that have come my way, especially early on in my career. I believe each new job opportunity was a stepping stone for the next, which eventually inspired me to start my own business. I realized fairly early on that I am a self-starter. The encouraging feedback from former clients and seeing and hearing about the positive changes in their health since we've been working together keeps me motivated each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is knowing that I am helping make positive changes in people's lives and overall well-being.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I am a very independent person by nature, so as a business owner, I have worn the hat of many roles (including, at one point - being my accountant!). This can be very draining and inefficient.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn the market and don't be afraid to seek out help from others.
  2. Be sure you enjoy what you are doing and re-evaluate from time to time.
  3. Don't give up because a competitor is doing better than you. There is often enough business for everyone. Sometimes it requires finding a new niche or approach to attract new clients.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I believe we can best serve our clients if we keep an open mind, keep ourselves educated, and especially develop and maintain good listening skills.
