Clean Beauty is a Lifestyle - Cassandra McClure

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cassandra McClure, an internationally recognized, multi-award-winning clean beauty entrepreneur and podcaster based in Palo Alto, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Clean Beauty Show is an on-air production. The show covers news, events, and founders and is available on all major platforms, including Spotify and iTunes. My customers are women interested in health and wellness, specifically self-care products.

Tell us about yourself

I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder leading me to discover the products I was using on myself and my clients (as a professional makeup artist) were causing harm to my immune system and making me sick. After research, I found the ugly truth about the beauty industry - it’s largely unregulated, and laws were not previously passed since 1938 to protect consumers. I made it my personal mission to demand change until “all beauty is clean beauty.”

And on December 30, 2022, President Biden signed a bill that included the “Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022,” giving the federal government more power over the beauty industry via the Food & Drug Administration. It was the culmination of years of advocacy work from the clean beauty sector within Congress and the public sphere to push for more standards that raise the bar on regulations and requirements.

I thought it would take decades for things to change, but I’m so proud to watch as the industry is literally changing before our eyes. Now, I have a new outlook: Clean Beauty is a lifestyle. We’ve come a long way with cosmetics, but now I’m looking at other areas of my life to clean up. From the water we drink and bathe in, to the groceries I buy and cook at home. Everything equates to living a clean beauty lifestyle. A life of joy, health, and longevity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is definitely launching the first “clean beauty” show (podcast) in the world. Creating a new conversation in the industry. That opened many doors for me, personally, but more importantly, it led to regulatory change so my daughter can grow up in a world where she knows exactly what’s in her cosmetics and personal care products.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I’d say one of the single hardest things I go through is imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and anxiety. It’s hard to tell them apart sometimes. It’s real and something I’ve learned to face head-on and not be afraid of. It’s gotten me this far, so I’m going to keep on going!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start TODAY!
  2. Don’t look back!
  3. Be consistent!
