Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jason Novetsky, Founder and Owner of Champion Mindset Group, located in Birmingham, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I founded, own, and run Champion Mindset Group, which is a sport and performance psychology coaching practice. We use researched based sport psychology techniques to coach athletes, performers, and teams on how to commit to a purpose, set process-oriented goals, create a positive identity, be mentally prepared, sustain focus, recover from and overcome adversity so they can compete and perform “in the moment” with confidence. Our clients are as young as 12 years old through professional athletes and performers.

Tell us about yourself

I became interested and passionate about sport and performance psychology because I needed it. I was a collegiate baseball player that struggled to perform to my expectations in my freshman year. I was told that my physical attributes were fine, but I needed to improve my “mental game.” That was 1988, and I did not know what that meant. So, I was given the book called “The Mental Game of Baseball” by Harvey Dorfman. After reading that book, I was hooked on how the mind influences the body and performance. It was a game-changer for me.

After my playing days were over, I wanted to work with athletes, but there were not many opportunities at that time. So, I went to graduate school and earned degrees in school psychology, clinical psychology, and education to bolster my knowledge. I also coached at various levels of baseball and worked as a school psychologist for 25 years. Around 2012, with a partner, we created Champion Mindset Group. And as we suspected, there was an enormous need for our work, and the business took off. Now, each day I am energized by my amazing clients and their thirst for excellence to overcome barriers to maximize their potential through mental skills training.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Of course I am always proud when my athletes accomplish their goals or overcome barriers, but more importantly, it is watching them develop into great human beings because they have generalized their mental skills in sports into their everyday lives to make the world a better place.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I take the attitude that every obstacle or barrier is an opportunity for growth, so my attitude is that there are no hard things for a business owner, just opportunities to learn and grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have clarity, and know your why.
  2. Back up your why with behaviors that are in alignment with who you are or what the business is becoming.
  3. Commitment to the process and growth over outcomes.

If an individual or team commits to those 3 things, the business, project, or team has the best chance of success.
