Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Charlie Webb, Owner of Nurtured Minds Wellness and Therapy Services, located in Leduc, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Nurtured Minds Wellness and Therapy Services. We offer a holistic approach to mental wellness, and our clients are anyone who is seeking change, growth, or renewal. We offer both office and nature-based services such as psychotherapy, wellness check-ups, custom workshops, and retreats.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in front-line mental health services for 15 years and began to recognize that our reactive approach to mental health just isn't working. Noticing the revolving door of the agencies I worked with, I began to realize that our communities need more services that offer a proactive approach to mental health and wellness. In my previous roles working for a variety of programs, I was fairly limited in the type of work I could do with my clients. Opening a private practice has provided the flexibility to allow me to practice in a less clinical and more holistic manner. I am able to effect positive change with my clients in less time and provide them with a more sustainable approach to their own healing and wellness.

My daily motivation is knowing that the work we do evokes positive change in our communities, along with the flexibility of self-employment that allows me to remain present and grounded in my family life with my husband and two small children.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've only been in business for under a year, but so far, my biggest accomplishment would be establishing a full caseload purely based on word of mouth and referrals through my current clientele in a community that I am brand new to.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being able to switch it off. I've had to work hard to establish clear boundaries of when I work and when I don't- yet I'll still find myself replying to an email on a day off or catching up on some notes on the weekend. It's an ongoing lesson in the work-life balance!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait until everything is ready or perfect; just do it! It's a constant game of juggle and pivot regardless :-)
  2. Diversify your income, don't rely on one specific stream.
  3. Network, network, network! Find your people, and business will come.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

So far, starting a business is the absolute best thing I could have done for myself and my family. We are still very new and growing, some days, I want to tear my hair out, but most days, I am full of joy and gratitude that I had the opportunity and courage to bring a dream to reality.
